She also emphasizes that freedom of expression is a great thing. “The many curses and the many expressions of support I have received show that The Netherlands is very divided when it comes to criticism of Islam. My approach has always been, and always will be, to stand up for women’s rights!”

In her book, Mother Meiland compares women in burqas with penguins and calls headscarves “not normal”. She also states that Islam “brings a lot of misery” and that she wants to stop this. Daughter Maxime (26) has said after all the commotion she supports her mother, but also that it was never her intention to exclude or disparage groups.
