The Refereeing Commission of the Minas Gerais Football Federation (FMF) chose to remove referee Paulo Cesar Zanovelli, responsible for the whistle in the match between Atlético-MG and Athletic Club, last Tuesday, at Mineirão, for an indefinite period. The reason is the controversial penalty marking that gave the victory to Galo at the end of the match, by 1 to 0.

In a very truncated game at Mineirão, Galo and Athletic tied at 0-0 until the 45th minute of the second half, when Paulo Cesar Zanovelli signaled the maximum penalty in the dispute between Ademir and defender Sidimar. At Central do Apito, referee commentator Sandro Meira Ricci disagreed with the marking.

According to the calculation of give, the FMF Refereeing Commission also understood the decision as an error, which directly interfered with the outcome of the match. Thus, he chose to remove the referee for a “retraining period”, in a punishment similar to that applied to Ricardo Marques Ribeiro and assistant Marcyano da Silva, who committed errors in the classic between Cruzeiro and América, in the third round – the two have already returned to scale.

The assistants of the game between Galo x Athletic, Felipe Alan Costa de Oliveira and Magno Arantes Lira, were not punished by the FMF Arbitration Commission, since the entity understood that the responsibility for marking the penalty in Ademir is entirely Paulo Zanovelli. The assistants are not included in the scale of the next round of the Mineiro due to a rotation that has been done throughout the competition.

The bid generated revolt in the board and team of Athletic. Striker Ricardo Oliveira, who made his debut for the club in the duel against Galo, cited a “feeling of helplessness” with the alleged error of arbitration.
