Trump was in contact with at least two people in Mar-a-Lago who later tested positive for the corona virus.

In the past few days, Trump had increasingly had to ask himself why he did not take a test despite the contacts. When asked at a press conference at the White House on Saturday, the president said he had been tested the night before. The day before, the White House had sent out a letter from its doctor saying a test was not appropriate because Trump did not show symptoms of Covid-19.

Pence in Mar-a-Lago too

The Brazilian embassy in Washington said on Friday evening that the embassy’s manager, Nestor Forster, had tested positive for the corona virus. Forster had been sitting at a table with Trump and Bolsonaro at dinner in Mar-a-Lago. Trump was also in contact with Bolsonaro’s communications director Fábio Wajngarten, who later also detected the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Wajngarten published a photo on Instagram last Sunday on which he poses next to Trump.

Vice President Mike Pence can also be seen in the photo. Pence, who heads the Coronavirus Fighting Group, said at the press conference on Saturday that he would speak to the White House doctor afterwards and was also ready to be tested. At first, no result was known. Bolsonaro said on Friday that he had tested negative for the virus.

The number of infections and fatalities in the United States has continued to increase. The director of the National Institute for Infectious Diseases, Anthony Fauci, said on Saturday that coronavirus infections have now been found in 2,226 people. 50 people died as a result of Covid 19 diseases. The number of unreported cases in the US is likely to be significantly higher because of a lack of tests there. The government is therefore criticized for this.

Promised more tests

Trump had declared a national emergency on Friday due to the spread of the corona virus. This will provide access to what he says is more than $ 50 billion in disaster relief, which the government can use to support affected states and communities. Trump had also again promised to dramatically expand testing options.

In order to contain the virus, the Trump administration has also extended its entry bans: Great Britain and Ireland are now also affected. Travel restrictions within the United States are also being considered.
