After chip shortages, market researcher expects a surplus in 2023 | NOW

More computer chips may be available next year than companies need, German market researcher Gartner told news agency Friday. DPA† This is striking, because technology and car companies have been struggling with poignant shortages for two years now. But because there is now massive investment in it, the supply may exceed the demand.

Due to chip shortages, for example, car manufacturers have had to stop or reduce production.

Major chip companies such as Taiwanese TSMC, South Korean Samsung and American Intel are now investing tens of billions of dollars in expanding production capacity to meet strong demand. Gartner believes this could lead to chip supply exceeding demand by 2023 or 2024.

Gartner does expect that surpluses in the chip market will be offset over time by the ever-increasing demand for chips in the world. As soon as there is a balance between supply and demand, chip companies will make investments with a view to future demand, according to the researcher.
