2020 was the year of the e-bike. The sales rooms were bought empty and more and more tinkerers tune their e-bikes illegally. Although they break the law, their handicrafts have met with great approval and interest. This was also the case in this case, in which a Münster resident was stopped by the police in the middle of the year and received applause from the network.
The fact that enthusiastic pedelec riders like to tinker with their electric bikes in order to reach higher speeds happens again and again – even if it is not allowed. However, it is rare for someone to design their own e-bike right away.
Thu saw it happened in Münster, where a 23-year-old assembled his own e-bike and heated it over the Lublinring. In doing so, he exceeded the limit of 25 km / h for pedelecs, which officially made the vehicle an S-Pedelec subject to labeling. In addition, a passer-by, who ultimately reported him to the police, reported that the two-wheeler was moved without pedaling.
The officers then went into pursuit and were able to catch the driver. When inspecting the vehicle, it turned out that the driver had put it together himself. In the conversation he explained to the police officers that he could not say himself how high his speed was. Since the 23-year-old does not have a driving license and the bike was not insured, criminal proceedings await him.
A trivial offense?
Some commentators on Facebook did not see this as critical, where the police reported the incident. Some found the e-bike so cool that they would like to build one themselves. Lutz Linnemann wrote:
“I hope the blueprints will be published later.”
But the fact that the 23-year-old had committed a crime was also weighted as not particularly serious. Instead, he was suggested a career in the electric bike industry. Pablo Rodriguez said:
“He deserves a verbal warning for his behavior & immediate employment with a renowned manufacturer of such vehicles.”
