After chaos at European airports: Brussels Airport unions fear problems during the summer holidays | To travel

It threatens to be a chaotic summer at the airports, experts think. There were already a lot of problems in Great Britain and Ireland this weekend. Thousands of people missed their flight. They are also aware of the problem in Cologne, Düsseldorf and Schiphol. It was busy at Zaventem last weekend, but there were no problems. Despite the many vacancies in Zaventem, the airport says it will be able to handle the crowds this summer.

Kurt Callaerts of ACV Transcom, who defends the interests of employees in the aviation sector, reports that it could be very difficult this summer: “There are still more than 300 open vacancies. Getting all those people trained by this summer? That will be a feat.”

A month ago, Zaventem airport itself cried out for more staff. They were looking for 1,200 people at the time. “The airport is fully preparing with all operational partners to ensure that the processes run as smoothly as possible. At peak times, (limited) queues cannot be ruled out, but we are doing everything we can to make the holiday period run as smoothly as possible and we do not expect major problems like we see at other airports,” the statement from Brussels Airport reads.

Transport experts think that the problems in our country will not be the same, but it will not be easy: “It will also creak and squeak a bit with us”, says transport expert Wouter Dewulf, “waiting for suitcases is certainly possible and it will be extra important to arrive on time”.
