The government is accelerating the completion of the New Administrative Capital Monorail project, which helps facilitate the movement of employees and citizens from Greater Cairo, the Administrative Capital.
The monorail connects the Greater Cairo region with the new urban areas and cities of eastern New Cairo, the Administrative Capital, where the project represents a major cultural shift in mass transportation.
10 new trains
The Ministry of Transport has announced the arrival of 10 monorail trains out of a total of 40 trains that will be supplied to the East Nile monorail project.
All construction work on the project within the capital is expected to be completed by the end of October 2022.
22 stations
In its first phase, the monorail project extends east of the Nile, the “administrative capital”, from the Nasr City stadium station; Up to the City of Justice station in the Administrative Capital, it is 56.5 km long and includes 22 stations.
Station names and locations
Stations include “The Stadium, Hisham Barakat, Al-Azhar University, Seventh District, Free Zone, Al-Moshir Mosque, Ninety Street, Air Hospital, Twist Hotel, Future University, Emaar, Al-Nafoura Square, Al-Birwa, Beit Al-Watan, Al-Fattah Al-Alim Mosque, R2 Residential District, Regional Ring, Al-Massa Hotel, Government District, Embassy District, Administrative Capital.
600 thousand passengers a day
Each monorail train consists of 4 carriages and it is planned to increase the number of carriages to 8 carriages, with an increase in population density in the new urban areas served.
The capacity of each of the two monorail lines is 600,000 passengers per day. Monorail trains are characterized by the fact that they operate without a driver and have a design speed of 90km / h and monorail time is 90 seconds.
Monorail trains run on a concrete beam and, for the first time, Screen Doors will be installed on the tracks in front of the train doors to maintain passenger safety.
Characteristics of the monorail
The speed of the monorail train reaches 80 km per hour and covers the distance of the first phase of the project in 60 minutes.
The railway carriages include extended corridors that allow the transfer of passengers between carriages for greater comfort under normal operating conditions and will also be equipped with cameras in the train cabin for centralized monitoring of the railways.
The scheme plans to provide monorails with LED screens to be used to provide passengers with travel information, or they can be used commercially in the broadcasting of paid commercials.
The top of the side doors will be equipped with a screen that will inform passengers of the name of the final station before boarding the train, and to allocate wheelchair seats for people with special needs, equipped with fixing means.
Opening dates
The first phase ended last September; will open this October; The project implementation rate exceeded 40%.
The opening of the second phase of the project is scheduled for February 2023. It is 42 km long and reaches the city on 6 October. Includes “Gamet El Dowal, Ring Road, Mariouteya, Mansourieh, Desert Road, Hyper One, Juhayna and Authority” stations, Urban Communities, Hosary, Dar Al Fouad, Industrial Zone, Express Train.
