After California, New York steps forward to ban new gas vehicles by 2035

New York State, after California, has officially begun the process to ban the sale of new low-emission passenger vehicles by 2035, Governor Kathy Hochul announced Thursday.

The official had already set this target last year, but had to wait, for legal reasons, for California to pass its law, which it did in August, he explained at a news conference.

Now it can take the next step and has asked its services to prepare the appropriate texts, with in particular milestones to 2026 (35% of sales) and 2030 (68% of sales) before reaching 100% of sales in 2035 .

By that date, all city cars, sedans, SUVs and pick-ups carrying passengers must be “zero-emission”, ie electric, plug-in hybrid or hydrogen vehicles. The text would effectively ban petrol and diesel vehicles.

At the same time, regulations must gradually tighten emission standards for vehicles with combustion engines.

“We have intermediate steps to reach in order to show that we are on the right track,” said Ms. Hochul.

Many countries have tried in recent years to limit the pollution of the automotive sector.

The UK, Singapore and Israel have pledged to end sales of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030, and Norway pledged to 2025.

US President Joe Biden for his part signed a decree in the summer of 2021 setting the goal that by 2030 half of the cars sold in the United States will be emission-free.

Sales of pure electric vehicles in the country, long lagging behind Europe in this segment, have increased in recent months and accounted for 5.6% of vehicle sales in the second quarter, according to Cox Automotive.
