Spain announced on Sunday that captain Sergio Busquets, everyday in Barcelona, has tested positive for covid-19 and that he has isolated himself from the rest of the national team, who have tested negative for the virus. Spain’s A national team will now not play the planned rematch against Lithuania on Tuesday, but instead the country’s U21 national team will play the training match.
As recently as Friday, Busquets scored 63 minutes on the pitch in the training meeting with Portugal, which is now said to have had consequences for the Portuguese national team.
The Spanish newspaper AS reports that Portugal’s national team must now be quarantined due to several players having been in contact with Busquets.
The Spanish midfielder visited, among other things, Portugal’s team captain Cristiano Ronaldo before the match, while both national teams took a joint picture before the match to market Spain and Portugal’s bid to host the World Cup 2030.
Portugal plans on Wednesday to play against Israel in the national team’s European Championship rematch and then Hungary, Germany and France await in the group stage of the championship.
