After Brexit, disappointment prevails in the fishing village of Ramsgate

With the end of the Brexit transition period, Great Britain definitely left the EU at the beginning of the year. But in the small town of Ramsgate in southern England, the chances of Brexit seem vague, and the starving fishermen believe that the government has sacrificed their interests in the negotiations with Brussels.

Once a large fishing industry flourished in Ramsgate, now the remaining professional fishermen only set out to sea in small boats.

The first day the EU rules no longer apply in the UK is cold and foggy. In order to protect themselves against the icy breeze, the strollers on the beach promenade of the coastal town of Ramsgate are thickly wrapped up, only a few steadfast people plunge into the waters of the murky English Channel on New Year’s Day according to an old tradition. A highly contagious variant of the corona virus has forced almost the whole of Great Britain into a hard lockdown, which is why restaurants, pubs, cafes and most shops in the southern English county of Kent are also closed. Accordingly, there were no major public celebrations than the Brexit transition period on New Year’s Eve at 11 p.m. local time with the Big Ben chimes in London expired. On the day after the definitive Brexit, in Ramsgate, which has been paralyzed by the authorities, neither the freedom longed for by the Brexiteers nor the concerns raised by the Remainers about the economic consequences of leaving the EU can be felt.
