TSG Hoffenheim
At TSG Hoffenheim, Nagelsmann had to take the plunge straight into the deep end. As a reminder: He took over the Kraichgauer in February 2016 on rank 17 after Huub Stevens resigned. At the end of the season there was relegation. He played the first game with TSG just three days after taking office on February 13, 2016 against Werder Bremen. At the Weserstadion, the then 28-year-old experienced a 1-1 draw with his team, which made him the youngest head coach to date on the Bundesliga sidelines. The upcoming games were mixed: two wins against Mainz and Augsburg were paired with two defeats against Dortmund and Stuttgart.

RB Leipzig
At RB Leipzig, unlike in Hoffenheim, Nagelsmann was granted complete preparation before his debut. However, a clear parallel to his FCB debut on the sidelines can be drawn: The first test with the Saxons was also lost in 2019 against a supposedly weaker opponent. At Cottaweg it was a bitter 1: 4 bankruptcy against FC Zurich. “Unsuccessful start!” He wrote SPORTBUZZER back then. Overall, the preparation was mixed: Nagelsmann won twice with RB, but lost just as often. But then everything went well for the competitive game opener. And the Leipzig team even got off to a furious start in the Bundesliga: Nagelsmann’s protégés finished off Union Berlin, who had been promoted to the Bundesliga at the time, 4-0 away. Then they defeated Frankfurt (2: 1) and Gladbach (3: 1) and tied FC Bayern at least one point on matchday 4 (1: 1).
