After attacks from Gaza: Israel flies attacks on targets in the Gaza Strip and Syria

The Israeli army has said it has responded to attacks from the Gaza Strip. The armed forces accordingly bombed targets in the Gaza Strip and Syria. A statement by the Israeli military said the attacks were directed against positions by the militant Palestinian organization Islamic Jihad.

The Israeli forces attacked “Islamic Jihad terrorist targets south of Damascus”, and “dozens” of Islamic Jihad targets in the Gaza Strip, the armed forces said. One of the targets was fighters who had just prepared missile attacks. Health workers in the Gaza Strip said four people were injured in the attack.

According to the Israeli military, 20 rockets had previously been fired from the Gaza Strip at Israel. Ten of them were intercepted by the Israeli anti-missile defense system, others were hit in uninhabited areas. The Israeli army initially made no information about possible deaths or injuries. Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the rocket fire.

Tensions escalate after the death of a Palestinian

In Syria, the Israeli army claims to have attacked positions of Islamic jihad south of the capital Damascus. Among them was a “hub” for the activities of the organization in Syria. A correspondent for the AFP news agency in Damascus heard several strong explosions shortly before midnight.

The Syrian state news agency Sana reported that “most of the enemy missiles” had been launched before they reached their targets. At first, there was no information available about possible deaths or injuries from the Israeli attacks in Syria.

Tensions between Israel and militant Palestinians escalated again on Sunday after a fatal incident occurred on the Gaza border. Israeli soldiers shot a Palestinian there who, according to the army, wanted to plant a bomb. Afterwards, a bulldozer from the Israeli armed forces recovered the body of the Palestinian, an army spokeswoman said. Islamic Jihad said the dead were a 27-year-old member of the organization’s armed wing.

A video circulated on online networks in the Gaza Strip in which young, apparently unarmed men try to recover the body of the man shot as the Israeli bulldozer approaches. Then gunshots can be heard, the men run away and the bulldozer takes the body away. According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, which is governed by radical Islamic Hamas, two civilians were injured in the gunfire.
