After arson: demolition of the burnt down refugee accommodation in Groß Strömkendorf

The ruins of the refugee accommodation near Wismar, which was destroyed in October 2022, are disappearing. The owner of the area is hoping for a buyer who will rebuild the former hotel.

Gross Stromkendorf

The burnt down refugee accommodation in a former hotel in Groß Strömkendorf near Wismar is currently being demolished. The owner told the German Press Agency that he didn’t want to rebuild the house because he was too old for that. He’s looking for a buyer. The insurance only pays the full amount if the building that was burnt down was rebuilt.

The thatched former Hotel am Salzhaff with space for 150 refugees was largely burned down in the night of October 19th to 20th. The 14 Ukrainian residents of the accommodation and their three carers were able to escape from the building unharmed.

The act made waves, Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) and Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) visited the scene of the fire. Initially, there was a suspicion of an extremist-motivated act, since a few days earlier a swastika had been sprayed on the sign in front of the accommodation.

Four weeks later, a 32-year-old firefighter was arrested as an urgent suspect. The public prosecutor’s office saw no extremist motive in his case and has since been examining whether he could also be the perpetrator of more than a dozen other fires in the area. Among other things, fires had previously been set in a wooded area and a carport.
