As reported, an arson attack was carried out on the building last October. At that time, strangers pushed combustible material through the mailbox in the front door into the hallway at night. It was only thanks to a lucky coincidence that the whole building did not catch fire. The incendiary burned for hours. The result: All rooms were smoky and sooty and could no longer be used. Not only were all the wallpaper and floor coverings covered with a layer of soot, but also the entire inventory.
While the amount of the pure building damage could be clarified relatively quickly with the insurance company, the inventory is much more tedious. “Here, the insurance company decides whether to purchase new items or to clean individual items,” says Alexander. The computers that would have been in the rooms would all be dismantled and cleaned. “Only if the cost of this effort does not exceed the current value, the objects are cleaned.” In the offices alone that are used by the Protestant youth, the inventory was damaged by at least 50,000 euros, according to the church master. In addition, there are the rooms that the Diakoniestiftung would have rented. “I currently have no information on the amount of damage.”
When you walk past the building on the outside, you can’t imagine what the arson attack had done inside. For him it was initially inconceivable that the damage would be so immense. “We’re easily over 100,000 euros.” Alexander is certain that this is a story that requires patience, with a view to the tasks that still lie ahead.
