This new measure from the Korean company initially concerns three devices, the Galaxy S20 and S21, and the Galaxy Tab S7+ tablet.
The Samsung company announced this Friday, April 1, a step forward towards the repairability of its products. From now on, users of smartphones or tablets from the Galaxy range will be able to repair them themselves, or through a third party, without being deprived of warranty.
The Korean company has indicated that it is making certain components of its devices available to the general public, but also the tools necessary to repair them as well as “step-by-step” instructions.
This decision echoes the launch of Apple’s “Self Repair Service” program in November. This now makes it possible to buy official spare parts of the brand in order to allow individuals to refurbish them without going through an approved repairer.
Three devices affected
Among the third-party companies that will be able to provide this service, Samsung has indicated a partnership with the online repair community iFixit, which has undertaken a similar collaboration with the manufacturer Motorola.
This program, which will begin in the summer of 2022, will initially concern three devices: the Galaxy S20 and S21, released respectively in 2020 and 2022, as well as the Galaxy Tab S7 + tablet. The company said it will include its other devices as it goes along.
This advance is part of the principle of the “right to repair”, aimed at preventing manufacturers from using products exclusive to their device, such as batteries that cannot be removed or special glues to seal them. This principle was notably pushed by the President of the United States, Joe Biden, in order to move towards greater product sustainability.
