Italian Jannik Sinner put in a memorable performance at the 2024 Cincinnati Open, securing his place in the final of the tournament. The 23-year-old defeated German Alexander Zverev 7:6 (11:9), 5:7, 7:6 (7:4) in the semifinals.
The victory was of great importance to Sinner because it gave him the certainty that he would finish the upcoming 2024 US Open as world number one, regardless of the result there. The fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the year begins on August 26. With this victory, the Innichen-born star now has 9,410 rating points, almost 2,000 more than Serbian Novak Djokovic (second with 7,460 points) and Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz (third with 7,360 points).
Speaking to the media after the match, the Italian tennis star was visibly satisfied and explained that he was very satisfied to beat an opponent who had been superior to him in the past, despite playing with a slight strain. “It means a lot to me. It’s a very different moment that I’m going through right now, so I’m very happy with this result,” he said.
Sinner will now face American Frances Tiafoe in the final of the competition. He defeated Norwegian Casper Ruud 4:6 6:1 7:6 (7:4) in the semifinals. This is the fourth meeting between the two at the highest level. In the three previous encounters, Sinner had a slight edge with two wins and suffered one defeat. The two last met in October last year at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, where the reigning world number one won in two sets 6:3, 6:4.
