Saturday 30 July is the last day that Arie and his wife Yvonne sell herring, mackerel and other goodies behind the counter. “It’s been great, we’re going to stop”, Yvonne says.
Fishmonger Plugge
Arie and Yvonne have run the popular fish stall on Apeldonselaan together for the past 41 years. Arie is now 67 and tired tells Yvonne. “He goes to the fish auction every morning and gets up at five thirty in the morning and then we work together in the business and do the administration at home. We work about 90 hours a week.”
“Arie’s grandfather (who was also called Arie) started the fish trade more than 97 years ago. Back then it was still a wooden fishing cart. Then Arie’s father took over, then Arie and then I joined.”
Love
The two have been married for 41 years and their first date was on the beach at a Golden Earring concert. “I worked in the bakery down the road,” says Yvonne. “But after our first date, we were married within six months and then we were selling fish together.”

Over the years, the stall has changed a lot and the two have attended big parties and supplied their fish to companies. “We also went very well during corona,” says Arie. “We are still good now, but when that changes we will have a problem. This is the perfect time for us to close the business.”

Nice neighborhood
While showing what local residents have brought in from tickets, flowers, bottles of wine and even a chocolate cake, the two are clearly emotional. “It’s such a nice neighborhood. It’s really heartwarming that people who have been getting their fish here for generations are going to miss us and bring a card or flower.”

One of the regular customers, Cinderella, says: “My grandfather and grandmother used to come here. Their mackerel and the fried mussels are our favorite. I don’t know where I’m going to get my fish yet, but certainly not at the stall further down the road.” Yvonne says: “A very good fishmonger will come and take over our stall. He has been with us for a few days and has partly the same range as we do. So be sure to try it out.”
