The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, on Baltic seabed will connect Russia and Germany, construction has raised concerns that Western European Russian gas and that Moscow will be able to increase the pressure on Ukraine, as Europe will be less dependent on gas transit supplies through Ukraine.
The United States claims that the pipeline is growing European Union dependence on Russian gas supplies, providing Moscow with political leverage, as well as a tool for potential power outages.
Baltic officials have also criticized Nord Stream 2, stressing that it is a geopolitical project and Energy for the purposes of the Union.
The 1,230-kilometer pipeline will supply up to 55 billion cubic meters of Russian natural gas Germany per year.
Construction of the pipeline is nearing completion, but work came to a sudden halt in December 2019 when the US imposed sanctions on Nord Stream 2 pipelay vessels. As a result, the completion of the last phase, which will now be possible, has been delayed.
