After a record decrease in the number of jobs, a unique increase will follow in the third quarter

The number of jobs in the Netherlands rose sharply in the third quarter of 2020. There were 164,000 more jobs than the previous quarter, reports the Central Bureau of Statistics. As a result of the corona crisis, the number decreased by 297,000 in the second quarter.

Statistics Netherlands says that the increase in the number of jobs has never been so great. The number of jobs is now slightly above the level of the first quarter of 2019.

The number of vacancies also increased in the third quarter. In the first half of the year there was still a decrease of 86,000 vacancies. In the third quarter, the number increased by 16,000. The number of unemployed at 419,000 in the third quarter was 70,000 higher than in the previous three months.

Trade, transport and catering

The job figures include all jobs, full-time and part-time. The figures include the jobs of people who cannot work or work less because of the corona crisis, but who are still paid. Such a provision is made easier by the cabinet’s NOW scheme, which was instituted due to the corona crisis to limit job losses and unemployment.

The largest increase in the number of jobs was seen in the trade, transport and catering industry (71,000). Other sectors with a large increase were healthcare (17,000), business services excluding temporary employment agencies (15,000), culture, recreation and other services (13,000) and education (12,000).
