So there is still a lot of work to be done, says climate expert Pieter Boussemaere: “We should always celebrate good news, because what we are talking about here, we could hardly imagine 10 years ago. Until even five years ago, it was said that we would reach 3, 4 or even 5 degrees extra by 2100, which would be a complete disaster for human civilization. “
“There is still a lot around 2 degrees, and we will still see many major changes, but we as a society may well be able to arm ourselves against the changes that await us.”
Boussemaere also warns against the short-term lack of drive, pointing out that CAT already takes into account in its scenarios that we massive CO₂ from the atmosphere will go get. “Including through large reforestation projects and by actively extracting CO₂ from the air with machines, but that is never applied on a large scale or proven. If this didn’t work out, we would end up higher again, somewhere around 2.5 or 3 degrees, and that prediction of +2.1 degrees is less certain. ”
