After a month in the intensive care unit of UMBAL Burgas, a man from Aytos lives a second life – 2024-09-20 07:33:21

“We’ve never seen him in such good condition. My father is among us only thanks to the doctors from the intensive care unit of UMBAL Burgas. Let everyone understand that these are specialists that Burgas should be proud of. They never for a moment gave up fighting for his life, with concern and attention,” says Mila Nedelcheva from Aytos. She is extremely grateful to Dr. Anton Grigorov, Dr. Daniela Lutskanova and the entire team of the Department of Anesthesiology, Resuscitation and Intensive Care at the Burgas Hospital. She says her father is living a second life after spending a month in the ward.

Although only 54 years old, Foti Nedelchev suffers from chronic lung and heart diseases.

Because of the damage to the lungs, he is monitored by a pulmonologist and is often hospitalized, and he is treated with oxygen therapy at home. “At the beginning of June, my father’s condition worsened again. They admitted him to the hospital in Aytos, although I insisted that we go to Burgas. After a few days he was discharged, allegedly with improvement. But he had a fever, he couldn’t breathe. He was blue and inadequate, so we urgently brought him to UMBAL Burgas”, says Foti Nedelchev’s daughter.

In intensive care, the man comes close to death – barely breathing, non-contact, inadequate.

He was immediately intubated and put on mechanical ventilation to replace adequate spontaneous breathing. The fight for his life has been going on for nearly a month, and the doctors admit that his case is one of the most difficult they have encountered. All possible means are used to restore breathing and weaning from the apparatus. Invasive ventilation is replaced by non-invasive ventilation. Foti sleeps with an oxygen mask, through which a device supplies pressurized air to assist breathing during sleep. After discharge, he has to use it at home as well, but despite this inconvenience, he feels much better and can return to his normal daily life. In the department, he is trained to use the device, to be confident in himself and to be calm that his life is secured.

“I can’t remember when we haven’t seen him like this. I thank UMBAL Burgas for doing the impossible for him. These doctors are people with a vocation, exceptional professionals, and my whole family is infinitely grateful to them,” Mila Nedelcheva concludes her story.
