After the major fire in the Handelsakademie I in the city of Salzburg, it is now clear that the building, which was badly damaged by the fire and extinguishing water, does not have to be demolished. During the renovation, the approximately 510 young people and 50 teachers are to move into containers on the school’s sports field for two years.

A permit from the city of Salzburg is still required for the construction of the container village. The sports facilities are designated as grassland in the zoning plan. “We hope for an exemption due to the disaster,” said Education Councilor Daniela Gutschi (ÖVP) on Friday after a meeting with the education department, the school directors and the federal real estate company (BIG). Discussions with the city are already underway.
Organizationally, the commercial academies are subordinate to the Ministry of Education. The federal government is responsible for the school.
Container already ordered
According to experts, time is of the essence. There are just under eight weeks until the start of the new school year. The containers are to be ordered as early as next Monday. In addition, a foundation and the supply and disposal lines have to be built – and the replacement building needs a roof. “From today’s perspective, we assume that this will be possible by the time school starts,” says Gutschi. If there is not enough time, you can still submit an application to extend the summer holidays by a week.
Other community uses
The advantage of the nearby sports field is that the gym and the buffet can be used together with the neighboring HAK II. It will also be checked whether, for example, computer rooms are available at the vocational school, which is also located in the vicinity. Alternative locations in the school car park or in the nearby Lehener Park, where a replacement container building for the renovation of an elementary school will be built in two years anyway, were out of the question due to the space requirement of around 3,000 square meters.
