Protesters in Washington Square Park in Manhattan on Friday night held up signs reading “My rapist has more rights than I do” and chanted slogans such as “Abortion is a human right.” Several women’s rights organizations had called for protests in the liberal US East Coast metropolis. The crowd continued to swell rapidly, marching down Park Avenue toward Midtown. Demonstrations were also expected in other parts of the country.
The US Supreme Court overturned the country’s liberal abortion law in a landmark decision on Friday. The mostly conservative Supreme Court thus paved the way for stricter abortion laws – up to and including complete bans. Some states have already prepared laws that can come into force if the previous case law is overturned. Abortion rights will remain in the more liberal New York and other states.
