Police hope that by comparing Belgian databases internationally, there can now be more progress in unsolved cases. The new DNA law also makes it possible for researchers to do more with DNA: family links can be traced and the DNA analyzed better. The methods and science surrounding DNA research have improved, but the law also allows more.
In the case without a solution around Ingrid Kaekaert a profile sketch of the man was made based on unidentified DNA (found at the crime scene). The researchers are also trying to determine hair color and eye color based on DNA.
The new DNA law has not resolved any major issues yet, but it has ensured that many old issues have been put to rest. Things were also finalized last summer Freddy Putseys in Tania Van Kerkhoven reopen.
These are files that contain unknown DNA of possible perpetrators and on which more investigative methods can now be used (thanks to the new DNA law). DNA from people who may have been involved is also collected in these files.
