After a “deep review,” Sheinbaum appoints heads of Sedena and the Navy

Mexico City. President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the heads of the Secretariats of National Defense (Sedena) and Navy (Semar) in her government will be, respectively, General Ricardo Trevilla Trejo –current head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the agency– and Admiral Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles, general director of the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

He explained that these appointments, which complete the composition of his legal cabinet, are the result of a thorough review of the best profiles and of meetings with the current Secretaries of Defense, Luis Cresencio Sandoval, and of the Navy, José Rafael Ojeda Durán, whom he recognized for their work and dedication.

For the first time, Sheinbaum announced the members of her government team through a statement, which was also shared on social media. She announced other appointments in press conferences and interviews.

In the document released yesterday, it is specified that the appointment of Trevilla Trejo is in accordance with article 14, section I, of the Organic Law of the Mexican Army and Air Force, and that of Morales Ángeles, based on article 6, section II, of the Organic Law of the Mexican Navy. He acknowledged both his vocation of service and loyalty to the country.

Members of the Sedena considered that the appointment of Trevilla Trejo is a boost to institutional projects, both military and public works, developed in the Fourth Transformation.

His knowledge of strategic areas, intelligence and operational development, as well as his performance in administrations in which respect for the human rights of citizens was promoted, give an idea of ​​what his command would be like.they said.

They also highlighted that he was one of the driving forces behind the training project for members of the National Guard.

Regarding Morales Ángeles, Semar commanders stated that he will strengthen the presence of the Navy and promote the reactivation of naval construction projects.

The next head of the Sedena is 63 years old and is originally from Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche. He has a degree in military administration from the Escuela Superior de Guerra and has master’s degrees in military administration for internal security and national defense, from the Colegio de Defensa Nacional, and in public administration from the Universidad del Valle de México.

Among other positions, he was military and air attaché at the Mexican embassies in Germany and Poland; director general of social communication for the Sedena; chief of staff of the Sixth Military Zone in Saltillo, Coahuila, and commander of the 43rd Military Zone in Apatzingán, Michoacán, as well as administrative and logistical deputy chief of staff for the Sedena.

He has received various awards, including merit in the campaign against drug trafficking, the Mexican Legion of Honor, and a special distinction for COVID-19.

Morales Ángeles, 58, is originally from Oaxaca. In 1989 he obtained a degree in naval sciences engineering, with honors. Among other things, he has master’s degrees in national security and naval administration; he is a diploma holder of the General Staff and has specialties in naval command and naval communications, from the Center for Advanced Naval Studies.

In addition to his diplomas, he studied a master’s degree in systems engineering at UNAM. He also took courses in defense policies and strategies at the Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies at the National Defense University of the United States, and as an inspection officer and instructor in the application of maritime laws at the United States Coast Guard.

He was commander of the ninth and 13th naval zones, director of the Center for Advanced Naval Studies and naval attaché at the Mexican embassy in the United States. He was promoted to admiral on November 20.
