Heracles Almelo came into action on Wednesday evening during round 28 of the Eredivisie. In Almelo, Erwin van de Looi’s team received the number four in the competition, AZ from Alkmaar. Heracles Almelo started at 6.45 pm with three different names compared to the last match visiting FC Twente. Heracles Almelo left the field after 90 minutes against AZ with a whopping 5-0 score and did excellent business in the fight against relegation.
Fantastic goal De Keersmaecker and penalties Hornkamp
Heracles Almelo managed to start aggressively against the visitors from Alkmaar, but were unable to create any major opportunities in the opening phase of the match. Apart from one goal attempt by left back Møller Wolfe, AZ managed to create little danger for Michael Brouwer’s goal.
Just under twenty minutes into the first half, Heracles Almelo takes a 1-0 lead thanks to a fantastic goal from midfielder Brian De Keersmaecker. After Fredrik Oppegård’s good return, the Belgian shot the ball from the edge of the penalty area with his left foot into the top corner. At the end of the first half, Heracles Almelo received a penalty. After a through ball from Bryan Limbombe, Jizz Hornkamp was forced to the grass by Riechedly Bazoer. The striker stood behind the ball himself and controlled the score in favor of the Almelo team. However, it didn’t stop there in the first half. One minute later, Heracles Almelo received another penalty because Bryan Limbombe was now knocked down in the sixteen-meter area. Jizz Hornkamp got behind the ball again and sent AZ goalkeeper Mathew Ryan into the other corner. Hornkamp scored his ninth Eredivisie goal of the season and made it 3-0 for Heracles Almelo in the match.
Sankoh’s final phase
Erwin van de Looi’s team got off to a good start in the second half with an immediate opportunity for base customer Sem Scheperman. The midfielder’s attempt narrowly missed AZ’s goal. Heracles Almelo had everything in order in the second act, just like in the first. Michael Brouwer, on the other hand, had to intervene a number of times in the second half, but together with his defense he kept the goal clean. Heracles Almelo itself created a number of opportunities in the second half through Hornkamp and Limbombe.
In the final phase of the match, Heracles Almelo made four more substitutions and Mohamed Sankoh, among others, came on for Hornkamp in the 88th minute. With his second contact, Sankoh scored with a beautiful volley on a pass from other substitute Jordy Bruijn. Sankoh’s goal seemed like the encore in a fantastic match for Heracles Almelo, but nothing turned out to be further from the truth. Sankoh also scored the fifth goal. Substitute Kelvin Leerdam passed the ball perfectly into the path of the young Heracles Almelo attacker who then calmly tapped the ball past Ryan.
