After 60 years, Nikon is ending SLR cameras. He joins his old rival

When you think of a camera, most of us probably think of a digital SLR. The construction with the abbreviation DSLR (from the English Digital Single-Lens Reflex) is still popular in the world both among advanced amateurs and professionals, but in recent years so-called mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses are beginning to gain more popularity. The pioneer in this area is the Japanese Sony, which fundamentally changed the camera market with its Alpha model series.

The growing demand for mirrorless cameras slowly began to threaten the sales of the big two, i.e. Canon and Nikon. It has clung to DSLR cameras tooth and nail, mainly due to its robust ecosystem of lenses. Some time ago, the market leader Canon had to admit that there was no future for DSLRs, and last year they issued a statement that the EOS-1D X Mark III camera would be the last professional SLR.

Now Nikon is joining its age-old rival, which is pulling the short end of the stick both in terms of SLRs and mirrorless cameras. A Tokyo company, at least according to the server Nikkei, after 60 years the development of DSLR will end. The last model with a mirror should be the Nikon D6, and now the traditional camera manufacturer will focus only on mirrorless cameras. However, this does not mean that Nikon will end the production of DSLRs – all existing models will continue to be manufactured and distributed.

Don’t overlook

Sony is solving another problem. In addition to consoles, cameras are also in short supply

Looking at the numbers, there is nothing surprising. Back in 2017, Nikon saw record shipments to the market with 11.67 million cameras rolling off its production lines, which was around the time Sony started to make a splash with its mirrorless cameras. In 2021, Nikon delivered only 5.34 million units to the market, which significantly affected the company’s position against competitors.
