After 4 years, a legal saga struck down Lutvi Mestan and postponed the outcome (review)

A 6-month-old baby died in the accident with a politician, so far the meetings have failed more than 20 times

Lyutvi Mestan suffered a stroke and this became the reason for another postponement of the case for the accident near the village of Zagorsko in Momchilgrad, in which a 6-month-old girl died. A document from the hospital in Momchilgrad was attached to the request for adjournment by the former politician, who is one of the two defendants along with the child’s father, according to which Mestan suffered an ischemic stroke on February 19 and was admitted to the hospital for treatment.

The case has already been postponed more than 20 times, and almost 4 years have passed since the tragic incident. During all the court sessions, the former leader of the DPS, who founded his party – DOST, accused the police, prosecutor’s office and court of bias and

was trying to suggest that he was the victim of a political order

On April 14, 2019, at the junction near the village of Zagorsko, when Mestan tried to join the main road to the Makaza checkpoint, a collision followed with a BMW moving at high speed from Kardzhali to Kirkovo. In the car, Yusein Ahmed is traveling with his family, they are returning to their native village of Parvitsa. After the impact, the Beemwe flew off the road and fell into a nearby ravine. 6-month-old Ejrin died, and her 10-year-old brother and their parents were injured.

The investigation lasted more than a year. Prosecutors charged Lyutvi Mestan and the dead baby’s father, Yousein Ahmed, with causing death by negligence. The case was brought to court in the fall of 2020, but was returned for further investigation. In early January 2021, it was resubmitted. Hours of court hearings followed. Mestan constantly made new requests for new expertise, questioning of additional witnesses. Several times he asked the court to withdraw, he was kicked out of the hall because of his behavior.

The first hearing in the case this year was postponed because the 3rd complex auto technical examination was not submitted within the legal one-week period. Now a conclusion was finally awaited, Mestan even quoted the last conclusion of the experts – that

Usain Ahmed was traveling at 141.8 km/h in a 90 km/h limit

However, his stroke now postpones the finale of the 4-year saga.

Lyutvi Mestan was born in 1960. He graduated in Bulgarian philology at Veliko Tarnovo University and worked as a teacher until the dawn of democracy. He entered politics in 1990 as a candidate-deputy from the SDS for the Kardzhali district. He appears with the name given to him during the so-called revival process – Vladimir Zidarov. At that time, the SDS had little support in the area and he failed to enter the parliament. 3 years later, Mestan is already a member of the DPS. He became a deputy in 1997 in the 38th National Assembly, followed by mandates in 5 more parliaments. He became the deputy chairman of the DPS in 2005. 2 years later, the commission on the files took out documents that he was an agent of the DS under the pseudonym Pavel.

Appointed by Dogan as the leader of the DPS in 2013, but in December 2015 the honorary chairman deposed him. He was expelled from the DPS and from the parliamentary group. Part of the activists in Kardzhalisko stood behind him and at the beginning of the next year Mestan founded Democrats for Responsibility, Freedom and Tolerance (DOST – translated from Turkish means friend). The new party showed warm ties with Ankara and this strained the DPS, but the bubble burst in the parliamentary vote in 2017. Although united with the NDPS, Mestan took only 100,000 votes and was left out of parliament.
