During Donald Trump’s reign, successive NBA champions invariably turned their backs on him. Now that Trump has been succeeded by Democrat Joe Biden, the tradition of a White House celebration has been restored.
Star player Giannis Antetokounmpo, in particular, was over the moon, even though he was unable to vote for Biden as a Greek citizen. But especially his improbable journey from a son of Nigerian immigrants to a tribute in the White House touched his heart. “If you believe in your dreams, you can achieve great things in life,” he said in his speech.
President Biden praised the Bucks not only for their athletic achievements, but also for their pioneering role in the fight for racial equality and justice.
For owner Lasry, himself a major sponsor of the Democratic party, the visit to the White House tasted like more. “Let us return here for the next 4 years of your presidency,” he said jokingly. “Or better yet: the next 8 years.”
