After 22 years, Jesse Lingard also leaves Man United

Manchester

After Paul Pogbaone more player left Manchester United this summer. He is a winger Jesse Lingard ending two decades of service.

Pogba is the first Manchester United player to be released for free this summer and the announcement was made on Wednesday (1/6/2022) night WIB. Four hours later, it was Lingard’s turn.

Manchester United officially released Lingard because there was no agreement on a new contract that expired on June 30. Thus, Lingard ended his 22-year career at Manchester United since he was still in the youth team.

Lingard was a member of the Manchester United academy from 2000 to 2011. He rose to the first team in 2011 but was soon loaned out to clubs such as Leicester City, Birmingham, Brighton & Hove Albion and Derby County.

He struggled to break into the first team until 2015, before being trusted by Louis van Gaal in 2015/2016. At that time Lingard appeared 40 times with a score of six goals. After that, Lingard always had a place in the first team.

His best season was when he scored 13 goals in 2017/2018 from 48 matches. Unfortunately, Lingard’s performance slumped and peaked in 2020/2021, when he only played three times in the first half of the season.

Lingard bounced back on loan at West Ham United with nine goals from 16 games. He returned last summer and was again just a bench warmer with two goals in 22 appearances.

Like it or not Jesse Lingard chose to leave Old Trafford in order to save his career, and maintain his chances of appearing in the 2022 World Cup with the England national team.

“Manchester United confirms Jesse Lingard will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of June. Jesse is a graduate of the club’s academy and has spent more than 20 years with United, since joining the under-9 team in 2001,” a club statement read.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Jesse for all the memories over the past two decades and wish him all the best for his future career.”
