Although not a champion at MotoGP Aragon, Joan Mir make history for Suzuki. For the first time in 20 years, a Suzuki racer is leading the MotoGP standings.
Joan Mir started the race at Ciudad del Motor de Aragon, Alcaniz, Sunday (18/10/2020) evening WIB, from sixth position. As the race progressed, Joan Mir broke through the podium zone and finished second after overtaking Maverick Vinales in the middle of the 14th lap.
However, in the last laps, Joan Mir was overtaken by Alex Marquez and drop to third. In the end, he finished third behind Alex Rins who became champion and Alex Marquez who finished second.
However, finishing third was enough to lead Joan Mir to the top of the riders’ standings to replace Fabio Quartararo. He is now leading the riders’ standings MotoGP 2020 with 125 points 10 points ahead of Quartararo.
Quartararo himself got a crash at the Aragon MotoGP. Despite starting the race from pole position, the Petronas Yamaha rider did not get any points after only finishing in 18th place.
Joan Mir’s rise to the top of the MotoGP riders’ standings is a special cut for Suzuki. Previously, the last Suzuki racer to lead the riders’ standings was Kenny Roberts in 2000.
“In the last 7-8 laps I started having problems with the front of the bike. The temperature was the hottest all weekend and taking the right choices for the race, that you are behind someone is not easy. My performance then decreased in the last six laps.” said Joan Mir after the race.
“It’s a shame because in some parts of the race I feel very strong. But today is not the day to win, but the day to take the top of the riders’ standings. So very happy for that.”
“We will try to fix the problem in the last section to be better at the end of next week,” he said.
Even though he is leading the 2020 MotoGP riders’ standings, Joan Mir has not won the race once this season. His best achievement is finishing runner-up three times in the Austrian MotoGP, Emilia Romagna MotoGP and the Catalunya MotoGP.
