Developers Zach Adams and Tarn Adams of Bay 12 Games in an interview PC gamer spoke about the success of the paid version of the legendary colony simulator Dwarf Fortress and its consequences.
Recall that Dwarf Fortress debuted on Steam and itch.io December 6th and in the first day after the release it spread all over the world in quantity over 160 thousand copiesalthough the publisher hoped for such sales only by the end of the second month.
As it became known, six days after the release of Dwarf Fortress on Steam, it almost doubled the indicated result – sales exceeded 300 thousand copies. This will make the developers millionaires.
According to PC Gamer’s rough calculations, excluding regional prices, Dwarf Fortress should have earned $9 million: Valve will take 30% of this amount, and the Adams brothers will split the remaining $6 million between the publisher, new artists and the composer.
“That’s a lot of money, but [разработка Dwarf Fortress началась в 2002 году, так что] should be considered for all 20 years. If divided [сумму] at 20 you receive the normal salary of a technical specialist. Quite tall, of course.”analyzes Tarn Adams.
What to do with all this money, Tharn still does not know, and his wife advised Zach to buy a bigger house. The developers will also have to find an accountant – the brothers are not planning Dwarf Fortress 2, so they will be content with the “tail” of sales of their game.
The classic version of Dwarf Fortress is available for free on the Bay 12 Games websiteand the prize is sold for 810 rubles in Russian steam. The Adams brothers plan to improve the design for several (or even decades) years to come.
