After 15 years, the hunger for “Mana” in Japan was not great • JPGAMES.DE

The current sales charts for the two weeks from August 19 to September 1, 2024 are available. In the first of these two weeks, almost nothing happened. Powerful Pro Baseball 2024-2025 remained the top seller in a weak week without any popular newcomers.

The week from August 26th to September 1st, however, was very eventful. With Gundam Breaker 4, Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash, Visions of Mana, Emio: The Smiling Man and Star Wars Outlaws, there were high-profile newcomers that dominated the charts in exactly that order.

Gundam Breaker has made a strong start overall with almost 100,000 units sold in stores. The headlines were made by Visions of Manawhich in Japan was almost unexpectedly weak startedVisions of Mana had the second weakest commercial launch of any Mana game, only Heroes of Mana for Nintendo DS had a weaker launch.

No hunger for mana

After 15 years, the hunger for a new Mana was apparently not very great in Japan. Of course, the best “Mana” numbers come from other times. However, the remake of Seiken Densetsu 3 four years ago showed that Mana is still popular. It sold over 150,000 copies in stores. Probably not insignificant: Trials of Mana was also released for Nintendo Switch. Visions of Mana was not compatible with the Nintendo console.

In Germany, Visions of Mana had a magical start in the retail charts. While Visions of Mana is likely to achieve better results in the West, the comparatively weak start in Japan is still remarkable. The marketing was quite emotional. Square Enix positioned Visions of Mana as Seiken Densetsu 5 and reminded people of the old days.

Of course, these are just the figures from the retail sector. Digital figures are being added, but they will not turn the tide. It will probably do neither harm nor good to the developer Ouka Studios: Bloomberg reported a few days ago that financier NetEase is pulling the plug on the developer behind Visions of Mana again.
