Drafted by New York in 2005, Staal played all 892 games of his career with the Rangers. He had been one of the assistant captains for 10 years.
Staal had his best offensive season in 2011 with 29 points in 77 games, and he was in the only All-Star game of his career. He has collected 188 points since joining the National League in 2007.
The 33-year-old defenseman will earn $ 5.7 million next season for the final year of his six-season contract.
