Afro-Latin Sisters of NYC Seek to Revolutionize the World of Makeup with Multiculturalism – NBC New York (47)

Mabel and Shaira Frías, a dynamic duo of New York sisters of Dominican descent, are getting closer to conquering the world of makeup by embracing multiculturalism, diversity and inclusion.

Although beauty and cosmetics brands have made great strides in recent years to make their makeup lines more inclusive, that was not always the case and Mabel felt there was a need in the market that Luna Magic Beauty could help fill.

With that in mind, the sisters launched Luna Magic Beauty in 2019 and became one of the first Afro-Latina-owned brands to be available at retail giants Walmart and Target.

Mabel and Shaira were inspired by their Dominican roots and their experiences growing up in a Dominican home in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan.

“I am inspired by my mom and my aunts because… in the beauty industry our moms are forgotten, at a certain age you get old, so we wanted to do [la marca Luna Magic] the most inclusive possible from an age perspective,” Mabel said in an interview with our sister network News 4 New York.

The sisters, according to Mabel, draw on the bright colors and textures they know and love, and included them in their brand, from the color of their makeup brushes to their eye shadows.

Since its launch, the sisters have been working to expand their makeup empire, even appearing on the business show “Shark Tank” in 2021, where they successfully introduced Luna Magic Beauty and walked away with an offer.

The sisterly couple have no plans to rest as Luna Magic Beauty hits CVS stores this summer.

Although the sisters are now in Los Angeles, Mabel shared with News 4 New York her vision for the future: to open a beauty shop in Washington Heights. A store that she imagines as a center that provides a unique beauty space with a luxurious experience.
