Libreville, February 18, 2024 (AGP) – Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani has taken over the rotating presidency of the African Union (AU) for the year 2024, succeeding the President of the Comoros, Azali Assoumani, it was announced learned from AU source.
The 37th summit of the African Union (AU), which was held this weekend in Addis Ababa, was marked by the appointment of Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani as head of the presidency of the pan-African organization. .
It should be noted that the presidency of the African Union is held in turn by the five regions of the union, with the Comoros holding the presidency for the year 2023 for the Eastern region.
The North Africa region includes: Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Tunisia and Western Sahara.
Following his election as head of the AU, Ghazouani declared that “ The escalation of unconstitutional changes in Africa constitutes an unprecedented violation of democracy and a serious threat to the stability of the continent’s institutions« .
Ghazouani called on African leaders to “ adopt their own conflict resolution mechanisms and give priority to consultation to overcome our difficulties and provide appropriate solutions to our disputes, free from external interference, in accordance with the principle that Africa’s problems are resolved by Africans themselves« .
The theme of the African Union Summit for 2024 was: “ Educating an African fit for the 21st century: building resilient education systems for increased access to quality and relevant inclusive, lifelong learning in Africa« .
Besides this theme, African leaders deliberated on continental issues, ranging from regional peace and security to continental development, AU reform and Africa’s increased presence on the international stage.
The African Union is an international organization that brings together 55 countries on the African continent. It emerged as an alternative to the Organization of African Unity in 2002 and aims to achieve integration between its members and establish a common market.
