Bloomberg News said today, Thursday, quoting informed sources, that the Group of 20 agreed to grant permanent membership to the African Union.

The agency added that the decision is expected to be officially announced during the G-20 summit on the ninth and tenth of September in the Indian capital, New Delhi.

Bloomberg added that this step will transfer the African Union – which includes 55 countries – from an international organization invited to join a permanent member of the group.

The Group of 20 currently includes 19 countries and the European Union, and earlier this year the group invited 9 non-member countries, including Bangladesh, Singapore, Spain and Nigeria, and international organizations such as the United Nations, the World Health Organization, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, to attend the New Delhi summit.

And last June, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a proposal to the leaders of the Group of 20 countries to grant the African Union full and permanent membership during the next summit of the group.

Countries, including Germany, Brazil and Canada, also announced their support for granting the African Union membership in the Group of 20.

During the US-African summit held in Washington late last year, US President Joe Biden called for a greater role for Africa in the international arena, expressing his support for the African Union to obtain permanent membership in the UN Security Council, and a permanent seat in the Group of 20.

The G20 currently includes 19 countries and the European Union. Earlier this year, this bloc invited 9 non-member countries, including Bangladesh, Singapore, Spain and Nigeria, and international organizations such as the United Nations, the World Health Organization, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, to attend the summit that will be held this weekend in New Delhi.

The Group of 20 accounts for 85% of global GDP and 75% of world trade, and its population constitutes two-thirds of the world’s population.
