Former black policeman Eric Adams, Democratic candidate, won mayoralty in New York, the most populous city in the United States, on Tuesday, according to US media citing preliminary results.
He has focused much of his campaign on fighting crime, rejecting calls to cut the police budget – a request from the #BlackLivesLatter movement – but promising to reform it from within.

He becomes the second black mayor in the history of the American economic and cultural capital. He previously presided over the Brooklyn neighborhood.
He was opposed to Republican Curtis Sliwa, 67, who led him in support of a relaxation of health measures linked to Covid-19.
