The second Regional Review of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 8 to 10 October 2024. The event will bring together government representatives and stakeholders from across Africa to advance to assess the implementation of the Compact since its adoption in 2018. Participants will provide recommendations for the next global review of the GCM at the International Migration Review Forum, which is scheduled for 2026.
On 9 and 10 October, an intergovernmental conference will be organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) – which coordinates the Network of the United Nations on Migration, a structure made up of 39 United Nations agencies. held in collaboration with the African Union Commission.
This conference will be preceded by a stakeholder meeting on October 8. These two events will bring together African Member States, intergovernmental organizations, UN agencies, civil society, the private sector and other key stakeholders to discuss migration management through four thematic roundtables covering each goal of the GCM:
- Table 1: Ensuring voluntary, orderly and regular migration
- Table 2: Protecting migrants through rights-based border management
- Round table 3: Supporting the integration of migrants and their contribution to development
- Roundtable 4: Promoting evidence-based and values-based policy-making and public debate and strengthening cooperation on migration
The review provides a vital platform for Member States and stakeholders to assess performance since the first Regional Review for Africa in 2021, while identifying regional priorities, gaps and challenges.
As migration remains a key issue in the region, this review aims to strengthen cooperation and align Africa’s priorities with global frameworks, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the business 2063 – Africa’s road map page for inclusive and sustainable socio-economic development.
