Toto’s legendary monument that has become a cult thanks to the unfathomable paths of the internet Africa is becoming more and more a sure-fire success. Now it has reached ten-digit levels on Spotify!

Everyone knows him, not all of them admit their secret love for him: Africa von Toto is one of those healing songs that always makes the world a little bit better when you listen to it. And obviously you hear him very often these days too. At Spotify, the super-anthem has now surpassed the surreal mark of one billion plays. This is of course not only remarkable because of the sheer number – but also because of the album that goes with it IV appeared in 1982 and Africa as the third single was released from it. Back then it was quite a success that was quickly gilded, but the song was increasingly forgotten in the nineties and noughties. It wasn’t until the social media in recent years rediscovered the song, crowned by a really strange yet great cover by Weezer.
Back on the stage
“This is more than a dream come true,” says David Paich, who wrote the number with Jeff Porcaro. “Many thanks to our families, friends and fans! Afrcia is the result of an incredible teamwork in the studio that has resulted in pure musical magic. Thanks to Spotify, Toto was able to connect with so many new listeners. I know that Jeff Porcaro would smile too now and celebrate this moment with us. ”Porcaro died in 1992 and couldn’t see the song’s incredible comeback.
The band will tour the US with Journey in April 2022, followed by their return to European stages. Alongside Steve Lukather and Joesph Williams, the band’s 15th live incarnation will be the magic of Africa bring to us. Because we all really need and deserve it – whether we want to admit it or not.
