The Pan-African Business and Development Awards celebrated its first edition in association with the Business Council for Africa. The awards ceremony took place during the 30th anniversary celebration of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) on June 17 in Accra, Ghana.
The Pan-African Business and Development Awards aim to recognize and celebrate outstanding organizations and individuals in the sectors of Industry and Finance in Africa. The event was organized by Afreximbank in collaboration with the Business Council for Africa (BCA), IC Publications, and Brand Communications.
One of the highlights of the awards ceremony was the recognition of Aliko Dangote GCON, Chairman & CEO of Dangote Group, who won the “Founder of the Year” Trophy. Dangote Group is known for its great industrial achievements and for being one of the largest groups on the continent with a pan-African footprint. The company recently opened a $19 billion petrochemical plant and business refinery, which received substantial support from Afreximbank.
Other notable awardees include Strive Massiyiwa, founder of Liquid Intelligent Technology, and Togolese Koffi Gervais Djondo, one of the founding fathers of Ecobank and Asky, the regional airline. Ethiopian Airlines was recognized as the “Pan-African Company of the Year” for its profitable and well-managed operations, as well as its contribution to distributing critical medical equipment and vaccines across the continent during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Telecommunications operator MTN and Egyptian company ElSewedy were also honored for their outstanding contributions to the transformation of finance, trade, and industry in Africa. Three banks, National Bank of Egypt, First Bank of Nigeria, and Coris Bank, were awarded as “Financial Institutions of the Year” for their activities in trade finance.
In addition to the individual and organizational awards, eight trophies were presented to members of Afreximbank to recognize their long service with the institution. Professor Benedict Oramah, Chairman and Chairman of the Board of Directors, who has been with the Bank for over 29 years, was among the recipients.
During the award ceremony, Mr. Oramah expressed his gratitude to the exceptional leaders and highlighted the importance of mutually beneficial partnerships in transforming the continent. Arnold Ekpe, President of the Business Council for Africa (BCA) and former CEO of Ecobank, also emphasized the need to recognize and praise business leaders for their contribution to Africa’s development.
Afreximbank, established in 1993 under the auspices of the African Development Bank, provides financial services to African governments and private companies to support African trade. The Business Council for Africa (BCA) is dedicated to promoting economic growth, trade, and investment in Africa, with a focus on fostering business excellence and collaboration.
