AFP continues its fight against online misinformation with the launch of NODES
Scientists and fact-checking experts, including AFP, have announced the launch of NODES (Narratives Observatory combating Disinformation in Europe Systemically), a European content observatory to combat online disinformation.
The main objective of this pilot project set up by AFP, CNRS, PlusValue, Sotrender, Science Feedback, the University of Venice, and coordinated by Re-Imagine Europa (RIE), is to develop a new mechanism to scale to analyze and monitor the origin, development and dissemination of content classified as disinformation.
NODES also aims to provide quantitative and qualitative data on the narrative approach to disinformation, concrete recommendations for future actions and new practices. The project will analyze the most prevalent content in traditional and digital media on three topics: climate change, migration and Covid-19. In addition, the teams will work in four languages: English, French, Polish and Spanish.
“Content is a key element through which we prioritize and understand reality. It is at the heart of the propagation of ideas, which makes it a key element of the public sphere. This content observatory will allow us to develop a global response to tackle the rise of disinformation in Europe. Content reveals the emotions and meaning behind speech. It can provide solutions that do not infringe on freedom of expression.”explains Erika Staël von Holstein, Managing Director of Re-Imagine Europa.
“The cooperation with the researchers of the NODES project will allow us to take a new step. From the daily fight against disinformation to the in-depth understanding of this phenomenon which plagues so many democracies”adds Christine Buhagiar, Regional Director for Europe at AFP.
