AFORE XXI invests more than 80 billion pesos in sustainable bonds

Mexico City. During 2023, Afore XXI Banorte allocated more than 80 billion pesos in responsible investments that considered Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) factors, which directly benefited Mexican society, while offering greater profitability for the Administrator’s account holders.

This amount is part of the Afore’s sustainable portfolio, made up of investments in Alternatives, Fibras, Thematic Bonds and Equity, marking a milestone as the largest amount invested by XXI Banorte with a responsible approach, emphasizing that a large part of the investment strategy focused on investment projects that had a high social impact while offering the best profitability and returns for clients.

In this regard, it is worth highlighting that during 2023, XXI Banorte established 61 commitments in the environmental field through 20 companies, tripling the number of commitments in this pillar compared to 2022. Likewise, through the companies in which the Afore invests, more than 1.6 million direct and indirect jobs were generated in the country, which is equivalent to about 3% of the economically active population in Mexico.

Through various thematic investments, the Administrator also invested $140 million pesos in projects that provide job opportunities for entrepreneurial women, promoting the empowerment of the female gender inside and outside the home; it allocated more than $792 million pesos in Mexican institutions that benefit women through high-quality medical services, and invested more than $8,158 million pesos in instruments focused on promoting access to education through educational centers focused on enhancing their professional development.

Regarding renewable energy production, the investments made by the Afore generated ~1,800 MW, equivalent to 5% of the installed renewable energy capacity at the national level. Likewise, the carbon footprint of the portfolio was reduced to approximately one million tons of CO2, reflecting XXI Banorte’s commitment to reducing emissions.

It is important to note that all the results of XXI Banorte’s responsible investments are detailed in the Third Annual ESG Report, corresponding to the period from January to December 2023, and were published by the Afore as part of its commitment to transparency.

This report, which is available on XXI Banorte’s website, complies with the international standards for non-financial information disclosure established by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) and the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).
