The Assemblée de la francophonie de l’Ontario (AFO) recently submitted two series of recommendations – to the ministry of Health and the new super-agence Ontario Health – to improve access to health and long-term care in French.
The AFO wants to make sure the new system (under construction since 2019 but slowed down during covid) adjusts its “francophone lens”. The political lobby of Franco-Ontarians is in the process of recruiting full-time expertise in this sector.
“Health in French is a question of equity, effectiveness and efficiency of the system and quality of service,” comments President Fabien Hébert. “Health and long-term care are among the most important concerns of the Franco-Ontarian community.”
The AFO makes proposals regarding “designations” under the French Language Services Act (LSA), regional health services planning entities, accountability and access for Francophones to the health.
Its recommendations were developed in collaboration with about a hundred experts consulted during the Health Reflection Day, held last September, and during numerous individual and group consultations.
