KABUL. Freshta Kohistani, an Afghan women’s rights activist, was killed by unknown gunmen in the northern province of Kapisa. This was reported by Tariq Arian, spokesman for the Interior Ministry, specifying that his brother was also injured in the attack. Kohistani, a former provincial council member, organized protests and raised awareness on social media about violence against women in Afghanistan.
The attack was the latest in a series of relentless violence in the country, even as Taliban and Afghan government negotiators continue peace talks in Qatar, seeking to strike a deal that could end decades of war. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack yet, but the Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for multiple attacks in Kabul in recent months, including those in educational institutions that have claimed the lives of 50 people, most of them students.
