Blindfolded, on his knees and then brutally executed: this is how Haji Mullah Achakzai, the police chief of the Afghan province of Badghis, died
Killed on Wednesday – The police chief was killed on Wednesday. Afghan Security Advisor Nasser Waziri, who knew Achakzai personally, confirmed the authenticity of the video to Newsweek, explaining that Islamists shared it through a network connected to the Taliban. And noting that the images were also verified by other police officers and government officials.
He has long fought the Taliban – The insurgents were after Achakzai because he fought the Taliban for a long time. “He was surrounded and had no choice but to surrender last night,” explained Waziri. “The Taliban targeted him because he was a senior intelligence official.” The Afghan security adviser also said that he and other senior advisors recently created an online private group chat that includes up to 100 Afghan officials who worked with the government – the purpose is to check where each individual is and make sure they are all safe and out of reach of the Taliban. According to Waziri, in fact, Islamists go house to house to find out where their “enemies” are, threatening and mistreating their families.
