G7, Johnson to strengthen population support

Boris Johnson will call on G7 leaders to continue supporting the Afghan people and strengthening support for refugees and humanitarian assistance. The situation in Afghanistan in the past few hours has been the focus of a phone call between the British Prime Minister, who chairs today’s summit via videoconference, and American President Joe Biden in view of the proceedings. The summit, scheduled for 3.30 pm, should be an opportunity for leaders to reaffirm their commitment to safeguarding the achievements in Afghanistan over the past 20 years, from women’s education to the rights of women and minorities, to discuss collaboration in evacuation operations from Kabul Airport and the long-term policy on Afghanistan to “ensure that any new government is inclusive and complies with international obligations,” as a note from Downing Street reads.
