Afghanistan: death toll from attack near Foreign Ministry rises to 10, UN says

LThe toll of the suicide attack this week near the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kabul, claimed by the jihadist group Islamic State (IS), is 10 dead, announced Friday the United Nations.

On Wednesday, a suicide bomber from EI-K, a local branch of EI, detonated his explosive belt in the middle of employees and guards coming out of the ministry.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (Manua) indicated that its own investigation into the attack made it possible to establish that the balance sheet rose to 10 dead and 53 wounded, according to a press release sent to AFP on Friday. .

“We continue to watch what happened,” she added.

The Taliban authorities, who often seek to minimize the attacks by underestimating the balance sheets, announced on Wednesday that five civilians had been killed.

The Italian NGO Emergency, which operates a hospital in Kabul, said it had received more than 40 injured.

The return of the Taliban to power in August 2021 ended two decades of war in Afghanistan and led to a significant reduction in violence.

Even if the Taliban claim to control security in the country, dozens of attacks targeting civilians have however been perpetrated in recent months, most claimed by EI-K.

Hundreds of people have been killed or injured in these attacks, mainly targeting Shia, Sufi and Sikh religious minorities, foreigners or foreign interests and the Taliban themselves.

Analysts consider that the jihadists of the IS, a Sunni group like the Taliban, but with which the latter maintain a deep enmity and ideological differences, remain the main threat weighing on the Kabul regime.
