Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi traveled to the Afghan capital Kabul on Thursday to meet senior officials from the authorities installed by the Taliban after they seized power in August 2020, including the head of the Foreign Ministry. , Amir Jan Muttaqi.

Deputy spokesman for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan Inamullah Samangani said on his Twitter account that Wang was also received by Prime Minister Mohamad Hassan Ajund and Afghan Deputy Prime Minister Mullah Abdulghani Baradar. He also posted several photographs of the meeting.

“Afghanistan and China have good historical relations and the Islamic Emirate wants to develop them,” Baradar said, according to Afghan TV channel Ariana. His office also stressed that Beijing will invest in the mining and energy sectors.

For his part, Wang stressed that Beijing “does not interfere in Afghanistan’s internal affairs or seek to enhance its interests or spheres of influence in the country”. “As Afghan friends often say, China is the only power that has not harmed Afghanistan,” he added.

“We are proud of this and hope to continue the traditional friendship between the two sides and develop normal and friendly neighborly relations,” he said, as reported by the Chinese Foreign Ministry in a statement, in which he stresses that “the internal government of Afghanistan is committed to peaceful reconstruction and has taken a series of positive measures to respond to the concerns of the international community”.

“We hope Afghanistan will continue to maintain inclusive and careful governance, better protect the rights and interests of women and children, and demonstrate tolerance and friendship among Muslims,” he said. stressing that China wishes to “maintain mutually beneficial cooperation”.

So far, no country or international body has recognized the legitimacy of the authorities installed by the Taliban, who established a government marked by the absence of women and representatives of other political groups and applied numerous restrictions on fundamental rights since their return to power.
