Afghan government and Taliban talk about peace again in Qatar

The Afghan government and Taliban leaders have resumed peace talks in Doha. Senior Afghan officials, including the leader of the government’s delegation, Abdullah Abdullah, arrived at a luxury hotel in the capital of Qatar yesterday.

The two sides have met more often in recent months, but the talks have so far been unsuccessful. Even now it does not seem that agreements can be made quickly.

battle flared up

NATO and United States troops, which have been in the country for the past 20 years, have now almost all left. Since their departure was announced, the battle has flared up again.

In addition to the Afghan army, militias often supported by the US in the past have also taken up arms against the Taliban.

Political solution

According to the German news agency DPA, the Taliban now control more than half of the Afghan districts. Taliban leader Haibatullah Akhundzada says his movement is ready for dialogue and has a “strong preference” for a political solution.
